This guide describes the process of assembling the components required to create your Gen 3.2 Power Meter. Although the guide below pictures an outrigger canoe paddle, the process is the same for all canoe paddle types (Sprint Canoe, Dragon Boat, SUP, etc)
Below is a diagram of the completed power meter assembly:
It is very important that the blades are correctly aligned relative to the markings on the spigot. Please study the instructions below to ensure you have the correct alignment.
The distance from 0cm mark on the Power Meter Spigot to the top of the handle must not be less than 350mm on the assembled paddle.
In this step, you will install the Power Meter Spigot into the handle shaft to assemble the handle section of the paddle.
Sand the inside surface of the handle shaft where the spigot will be glued to aid adhesion.
If you purchased any shaft from One Giant Leap then you'll find that the inside surface of one of the ends of the shaft has already been sanded & degreased. You can identify the sanded end as it won't be shiny & smooth like the end that was not sanded.
If your Tee Grip is currently separate, then you will need to attach this to the handle shaft first. We recommend using epoxy adhesive, sanding and degreasing glued surfaces to create a strong connection.
Glue the Power Meter Spigot into the end of the handle shaft. The use of hot-melt glue is highly recommended so that the spigot can be removed if required.
Ensure 35mm of exposed spigot between the end of the shaft and the 0cm marking. There is an engraved line on the spigot indicating where the handle shaft should end.
Ensure that the engraving is aligned such that when it is installed into the paddle shaft, the engraving and LED are pointing in the same direction as the blade face that forces against the water.
In this step, you will connect the blade, paddle shaft and clamp to assemble the blade section of the paddle.
Trim the shaft to the appropriate length to achieve your desired paddle length when assembled together with the handle section.
The details of the blade/shaft/clamp connection are specific to the model of the individual components used. It is recommended that you consult with the supplier for guidance on cutting and gluing.
The following guidance applies to components sourced from One Giant Leap:
Sand glue surfaces to aid adhesion. If you purchased any shaft from One Giant Leap then you'll find that the inside surface of one of the ends of the shaft has already been sanded & degreased. You can identify the sanded end as it won't be shiny & smooth like the end that was not sanded.
The use of hot-melt glue is highly recommended for the shaft/blade connection so that the two can be disassembled if required.
The use of epoxy adhesive is recommended for the shaft/clamp connection. The small surface area of the glue connection requires the use of a strong adhesive.
Open the clamp lever and slide the handle section onto the blade section to create your fully assembled Power Meter. Close the clamp lever to lock the handle assembly into position. Adjust the clamp to achieve a secure connection.
